Attend Your Favorite Author Event

In-person literary events are still relevant, even in a world of digital everything. Attending book signings, readings, and author panels is more than just a way to meet a favorite writer. It also supports the literary community, and fosters a love for reading. Beyond that, it keeps authors writing and creating masterpieces we can all enjoy. I raise this topic because I’ll be a featured author at the Suffolk Author Festival in Virginia, on March 15 of this year.

Encouraging and Sustaining Writers

Writing is often a solitary and demanding endeavor. (My wife refers to me as a “hermit” when I’m in writing mode). Put simply, bringing a book to life can be isolating, whether we sell twenty books a year or thousands. In-person events offer authors the opportunity to directly engage with their audience, receiving immediate feedback and encouragement. When readers show up to a book signing or a reading, they provide tangible proof that an author’s words have made an impact. This support is invaluable, especially for emerging writers or those publishing outside the mainstream. A well-attended author event validates our hard work and inspires us to continue creating. In addition, some authors—like me—sell more books at author events than through digital downloads or print-on-demand sales.

Strengthening Literary Communities

Book events are often held in independent bookstores, libraries, and cultural centers, providing spaces where readers and writers can connect. To some degree, these institutions are under attack, both economically and politically. By attending author events, readers not only support individual authors but also contribute to the sustainability of these vital institutions.

On top of that, author events foster a shared enthusiasm for literature. I’ve sometimes said that authors aren’t normal, which sounds much worse than it is. What I’m referring to is the fact that conversations among writers and readers are often rich and engaging, and create a sense of camaraderie among us. And as for younger or aspiring writers, I’ve seen them light up when talking to an established author at an event, inspiring them to write more and ignite their passion for storytelling.

Gaining Unique Insights and Experiences

One of the greatest advantages of attending an author event is the opportunity to hear directly from authors about their creative processes, inspirations, and challenges. Live readings bring books to life in ways that go beyond the printed page. Hearing an author’s inflection, tone, and personal anecdotes can deepen a reader’s understanding and appreciation of a story.

Many author events include Q&A sessions, allowing attendees to ask questions they otherwise may not be able to. These interactions provide deeper insights into an author’s work and give readers a behind-the-scenes look at the complexities of writing and publishing. Such experiences can make books feel even more personal and meaningful.

Enhancing the Longevity of Print Culture

Even with the rise of digital books and tiny attention spans, physical books have never gone away. And the personal touch of speaking with an author at a book event reinforces the unique quality of the written word. When we attend author events—as authors or readers—we ensure that printed words will have a place in our collective future. This shows that there is still value in tangible books and face-to-face conversations.

When we support author events, particularly at independent bookstores, we also help to maintain diversity in the publishing industry. Rather than having the books available to the public be determined by an impersonal algorithm on a website, when we attend author events, we keep a wide variety of books in the public eye. And a thriving independent book scene ensures that unique voices, diverse perspectives, and lesser-known authors have opportunities to reach audiences.

Supporting Authors Through In-Person Events

Supporting authors doesn’t require grand gestures—simply showing up makes a difference. But here are a few ways to maximize your support:

●Attend Readings and Signings: Even if you have already purchased the book, going to the event and participating in discussions fosters a vibrant literary culture.

●Buy Books at the Event: (This is my favorite!) Purchasing directly from the hosting venue supports both the author and the local bookstore.

●Engage on Social Media: Share your experience, photos, and favorite takeaways from the event to encourage others to participate.

●Bring a Friend: Introduce others to the joy of author events, expanding the audience for literary gatherings.

●Ask Thoughtful Questions: Engaging in discussions makes the event more enriching for both the author and the attendees.

Conclusion

At a time when digital content is more prevalent than ever, the power of an in-person author event shouldn’t be underestimated. These gatherings provide crucial support for authors, foster a sense of literary community, and enhance the overall reading experience. By attending and actively participating, readers help ensure that authors continue to create, bookstores remain open, and the magic of storytelling thrives. The next time an author event takes place near you, consider showing up: you might just discover a new favorite book, connect with like-minded individuals, and play a role in sustaining the literary world for generations to come.
